What is Functional Diagnostic Nutrition®?

“FDN is an emerging field and growing body of work that bridges the gap between clinical nutrition and functional medicine”

“FDN is a type of detective work that seeks to identify and correct the underlying causes and conditions that lead to our patient’s health complaints”

“FDN is not diagnosing or treating any disease nor practicing medicine”

Reed Davis, Founder ~ Functional Diagnostic Nutrition® Certification Course

While serving for several years as the Clinical Nutritionist and Case Manager in a Wellness Center in Southern California, I made my own observations about who got better and who did not. Without question, the patients who improved the most were the ones working as close to the underlying cause as possible, and not simply treating the symptoms. Wanting to help as many people as possible, I studied and used functional lab work (saliva, blood, urine and stool) as it applies to nutrition and other natural protocols with hundreds of patients.

“It became apparent that the more we worked exclusively at the functional level, the better the clinical outcomes were for our demographic.”

Time and again, regardless of their original health complaints, patients were more compliant and achieved better results when we educated them on function and healing, instead of only treating their symptoms. Using the minimum of palliative care and maximizing improved function appeared to be the secret formula. Logically then, investigating malfunctions and seizing opportunities for healing became our focus and modus operandi. We used every lab test we could on every patient we could. The more we educated ourselves and our patients, the more “miraculous” were the recoveries we witnessed.

Naturally, this was exhilarating work. As a lay-practitioner my enthusiasm was unrestrained, to say the least. Learning each new lab was thrilling. Patient Education wasn’t work to me, it was like getting paid to have fun teaching. And so on the road I went. Workshops, screenings, lectures! I did them twice a week for five years and the center grew by leaps and bounds.

“The last time we counted, we’d served over 11,000 people.”

Along with the clinical work itself, educating others became a passion, gave me a sense of purpose and provided a mission that I carry out to this day. Needless to say, I found my niche practicing and teaching functional lab work. Trying to systematize my work lead to the discovery that we had encountered an emerging field. We named this growing body of work “Functional Diagnostic Nutrition® (FDN).
